Autumnology

As far back as a long time ago,I’ve been every year searching for Autumn.Walking to school one day in October in my 14th year,I gazed up into a canopy of Beech and it’s hues of gold and was mesmerised.

From that day on I became aware of the Autumn Foliage as never before and as the years went by read all I could about Autumn searching out poets that felt the same way about the season as I did.

Later in my teens I came across an article in a National Geographic Magazine about Autumn in Upstate New York.It had a photo of a country lane with a white picket fence in a fiery autumnal backdrop.I vowed to get there some day.

Further down the line , i looked up and read anything i could find on Fall Foliage in New England and drove my classmates crazy with talking about every aspect of Autumn they cared to hear about ( and they most times didn’t) and the rest as they say .. is history.

Searching for Autumn is like searching for a piece of my soul that makes it complete.Each year I look forward to the season, having been born at the start of it, another year around the sun for me.Whether it be in Olde England or New,my quest continues.

I search for old and familiar places to see how they’ve changed and new scenes that I can store in my memory to warm a winters evening

The combination of exhilaration and sadness keeps me searching as does the peace of the season that it brings me.The fleeting nature, it’s moods and it’s unpredictability makes me search all the more.The mornings of mist, chill in the air, crunching of leaves, hot apple cider etc all add to it

So I say thanks to my young self who on that walk to school has given me years of enjoyment and more to come and maybe I just go looking for her to remember how it was the first time.
